Thanks to our annual Wide Open Walls festival, Sacramento is graced with a vibrant and powerful mural by artist, Adnate. This is one of many Adnate murals scattered across the globe. He paints large scale, captivating murals centering indigenous peoples as a way of “creating a statement of reclaiming the land that was always theirs.”
From his website description, it seems Adnate understands that the process and approach he takes in creating these messages is crucial — particularly as a white artist. He knows that it must be based on being in integrity in relationship with the indigenous people’s themselves:
Matt Adnate acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands in which he works and creates on and their Elders past and present.

Adnate hopes that the murals he’s created will contribute to the change in society’s views and educate the public for as long as the murals and canvas can stand.
He has learnt the importance of engaging with communities and consultation with elders and significant figures. This is a process that is important to stay true to the message he is sending through his work to the public.
Bravo. Thank you for sharing about Adnate. I look forward to more. It is so important to share and raise awareness of the art around us.
